![]() ![]() The story, which unfolds through in-game notes, phantom dialogue, and surreal set pieces, is drip-fed to such a slow degree that L ayers of Fear 2 risks being described as meandering at first pass. Layers of Fear 2 is a bigger yet subtler game than the first, which is manifested by its exceptionally slow burning first-half. As the journey begins, we hit familiar ground - an increasingly contorted perception of reality informed by trauma, displayed in symbolic interpretations of events passed. Set aboard an ocean liner serving as the setting of a new movie, Layers of Fear 2 explores the torment of an actor under the direction of an unconventional director (as portrayed by the incomparable Tony Todd). Layers of Fear 2 is a staggering achievement in the genre, but much like the original game, it too has its own caveats - of which keeps perfection from its grasp. This rings true in each facet of the game’s parts - from the gamut of its twisted machinations to its approach to storytelling, the latter of which is the most complex, thought-provoking story that the studio has told to date. Let’s get this out of the way Layers of Fear 2 is Bloober Team’s most ambitious game yet. Following their last title, the utterly fantastic Observer, Layers of Fear 2 is their next masterstroke contribution to the horror genre. I know I’ve explained this in past coverage of the studio, but I can’t help be proud of this team for their growth and accomplishments. Layers of Fear wasn’t perfect, mind you, but it showed immense potential on the part of Bloober Team’s approach to horror game design. Following a painter driven mad by trauma, the game subjected players to a series of escalating horrors, each more twisted and unpredictable than the last - impressively so. inspired horror games, though its saving Grace was that it stood out from uninspired clones thanks to clever ideas and impressive imagery. I'm just picky because I like color lol.Bloober Team’s original Layers of Fear hit amidst a wave of other P.T. but if you simply don't care about that and you're in it for the story more than its visuals, you will not be disappointed upon Layers of Fear 2. ![]() In full-summary, I do recommend it to other gamers, it's just the lack of color made it a bit off-putting for me. and there will be many moments like that upon playing the game. Like Visage, the game does a very good job at inducing fear in you, the freaking manequins that appeared behind me on an elavator sequence gave me quite a fright. Many times the areas you explore are linear paths in black, white and grey but what the game lacks in colors, it definitely makes up in it's dreading atmosphere. Layers of Fear 2 is a very visually dark, almost achromatic kind of game. The game developers make an excellent job, even better than it's predecessor in keeping the player hooked with the adrenaline rush flowing through your skin as you're desparetly trying to get away from the monster to avoid getting slaughtered by it.Īll that being said, if you are thinking of buying the game, you must be aware that there will hardly be any colors involved. I made it to act 2 "The Hunt" (the game has 5 chapters, or acts as they are called here) and they all seem exciting. It definitely isn't a bad game by any means, I think fans of the series wil greatly appreciate it. You're essentially an actor in what appears to be a film studio on a luxury liner. Like it's predecessor, you collect many interesting objects along the way that tell you more about the game's backstory. The game also has a safe-mode which makes it accessible to players who may be more interested in exploring the plot, story and narrative rather than worrying about when they will be forced to run away again. Layers of Fear 2 takes on a much more classic approach to the horror genre, incorporating monster encounters with scripted chase scenes and tension-grabbing moments with unexpected twists and turns in every direction.
